A Spring Meditation

Happy Spring Equinox! For me, this is the most important week of the year. Spring Equinox is quickly followed by Full 'Seed' Moon on Wednesday and the new growing season begins in earnest. Light and dark are once again momentarily balanced before daylight extends its reach into the night. Symbols of new life and re-birth are all around us - eggs, rabbits, Easter - and thoughts turn to spring cleaning, de-cluttering and freshening up our homes. We think about planting seeds in the garden, hens start to lay again and lambs are born. On these special days I create ritual to help align myself and my creative practice with the cycles of Mother Earth. I'd like to share with you a simple ritual and meditation that honours the season's changes, celebrates the growing light and helps you reconnect with the earth.

Create a Nature Table

Building a nature table from items you find in your own garden or while walking is a great way to observe the changes happening around you and to give thanks for everything the earth provides. This is a wonderful activity to do at any age: it will encourage you to slow down, breathe, and really connect with the earth and your own creative spirit. I like to use a wooden platter to create my nature table (I often call this an altar) and I love to place small pieces of my art, photographs or gifts from others, alongside leaves, flowers, stones and driftwood I've found on the beach. It can be as simple or as complicated as you like. As small as a saucer or as large as your dining table!

Sit outside on the ground in a comfortable seated position facing the sun. Wrap a fluffy blanket around you if it's chilly and close your eyes. For a moment just listen to everything around you...what do you hear? What do you smell? Become aware of the earth beneath you - feel how it supports your body. Take a deep breath in and relax...

Feel the sun on your face. Feel how it warms your skin. Imagine the warm light from the sun entering your body through the top of your head and moving down through your body. Feel it reach your throat, your heart, and breath the light into your lungs. Imagine the light moving down your body like a ray of sparkles - igniting your creative spirit, running through your arms, your legs, your feet.

Your body is glowing with light, with creative energy. Feel yourself connected to the earth and imagine this energy flowing out down into the ground. Your light touches roots, seeds, bulbs - visualize them waking up, sprouting, growing, sharing your energy and warmth. Imagine your own roots growing, the seeds of your creativity bursting into life and you becoming strong, grounded and well supported. Feel the stability and security of the earth beneath you. Know that the earth will always support you.

Take another deep breath in and give thanks for everything the earth provides.

Traditional Celtic blessing:

Farewell to wintry spirits and friends; On morrow we greet the spirits of spring;

Our blessings to thee as your way you wend; And merry we'll meet next winter again.

May your seeds of creativity grow. May the Spring breeze blow away what no longer serves you. May the warmth of the sun bring you inspiration, new growth and abundance.

Much love x
